Homeschooling allowed us to get out of the house and explore while most other children were in school. Learning doesn't have to happen within the confinements of a classroom. We got to go swimming for PE, and often had the pool all to ourselves. We went on picnics at This is The Place, fed animals at the farm at Thanksgiving Point, rode our bikes along beautiful trails, completed lots of science experiments, and cuddled lots of chickens. We studied butterflies at the biosphere, rode horses at the farm, and examined dinosaur bones at the museum. This is what I will miss most about homeschool. Living a simple life free of carpool drop-offs and pickups. We had no time constraints. No early wake-up times. No rushing to get out the door and make school lunches for everyone. We got to "school" wherever we wanted, and it was GLORIOUS. I loved that most of the paces we visited were really quiet too. Take notice that we were often the only ones in most of the pictures below. We literally had museums, pools, and farms all to ourselves. We got to go hiking alone on trails that are normally swarming with people during the summer. We also got to participate in extracurricular activities, like soccer, without having to rush home from school, barely have time to eat dinner, only to rush off to practices and games. Homeschooling really is so beautiful!
We also had a homeschool store. Everyday that the boys completed a day of homeschooling without too much complaining, they each got school money. Every Friday the store opened, and the boys got to spend their money if wanted. It was a great lesson in math, and the importance of saving. The boys loved it, and I enjoyed watching my first grader learn to count money as well as a bank teller!
