Summer of change

To be honest, this has been a weird Summer for me. My boys are older, and there has been a lot of changes. Not huge changes, but big enough to throw me for a loop.  I feel like this is the first summer that my boys prefer staying home vs. going on adventures.  Wesley is getting older, and his interests are slowly diverging from those of his brothers.  Our house has been full of a lot of complaining and moaning and its been hard finding activities everyone enjoys.  I love getting out of the house, so staying home every day is not an option for me.

Also, our annual summer California trip was canceled due to family illnesses.  California is something that we all enjoy and were all looking forward to so I am a bit sad about that.

On top of that, Wesley's piano teacher that we just hired quit on us.  Wesley LOVED him.  Their personalities were so similar, and his teaching style was so unique. One day after a lesson he sent me a text telling me that he will no longer be able to teach Wesley and that he is done coming over to our house.   Wesley was really upset, and I was extremly  mad that he didn't have the guts to talk to me in person.  We had JUST hired this teacher because Wesley's learning style didn't match well with his previous teacher. He was Wesley's fourth piano teacher, and now we will have to find another teacher! *sigh*

Then, besides all those changes, two of my best friends (Mandy and Jaime)  both moved away this summer.  They both had kids very close in age to my boys. Mandy moved in two years ago, but we got along so well it seems like I've known her a lot longer.  Our kids played for HOURS every day.  There was always drama and fighting; our door bell was constantly ringing; our yard was trashed from all the kids playing on it... but my kids played outside ALL day with friends which made the chaos worth it. My kids and her kids were best friends. We went to museums, pools, splash pads, parties,  ponds, hikes, and so much more together.  Mandy and I were constantly borrowing things from each other, giving each other chocolate on hard days, and we spent hours talking on the lawn while the kids played. She helped me through some hard times, and I likewise was there for her when her soldier husband had to temporarily move to the east coast.  I take a long time to warm up to people.  The introvert in me doesn't need or want to socialize with a lot of friends, but when I do make a friend I hold on tight which makes these changes so much harder for me. Mandy has only been gone a week, and the neighborhood seems so much lonelier.  Its going to be a big adjustment for all of us now that her family is gone.  Besides Mandy and her kids moving,  Jaime and Addie also moved away in June.  I watched Addie for two years.  Blake and Addie got along so well, and I took them on so many fun adventures. Blake and Addie were practically siblings.  She was such a huge part of our life - its going to be strange not having her around to play with Blake anymore.  Jaime was also so happy and positive, and I loved having her in my life.  Having one good friend move away is tough, but having two is depressing. Change is hard, and there has been a lot of change all at once.  It has been rough, but I know in the scheme of things these really are minor changes.  This school year will bring a lot of (hopefully) good change - preschool, dance class, more free time for me, new teachers, new friends, and new extracurricular activities.  We got this!!

Like I mentioned earlier, I don't like sitting at home for too long.  Its too depressing.  Most of our activities are simple, but they get us out of the house and help create summer memories.  Here are some little adventures we did in July -

One thing on our bucket list was to have a "quarter" party.  This was such a simple and fun activity that ALL the boys enjoyed.  I went to the bank and got about $6 in quarters for each boy.  I gave them each a bag of quarters, and an empty bag to put their treasures in.  We then went to the mall, and they got to run around and buy what ever they wanted from the quarter machines.

Mom!!  Look!!!  I can give Blake a piggy back ride!!

With our new county rec pass, we have been trying to go to the pool a lot.

Utah has such amazing sunsets!

We went to the park to have a picnic, and they were having an aquatic dog show.  We would have stayed longer to watch, but it was 100 degrees outside with no shade, so we lasted about 5 minutes before I felt like I was going to melt into a pile of flesh and bones.

Chase got to go to his first scout camp this summer.   The first day he had a hard time and told me he hated scout camp.  However, on the second day he was able to buy a pocket knife and decided he actually  LOVED scout camp.  Dirt + knifes + BB guns + obstacle course + bow and arrows = happy cub scout

After taking Wesley to swim lessons, I came back to a flat tire.  I called AAA, and they rescued me in about 40 minutes.  Jason was able to leave work a little early to come get the boys before they destroyed my car from boredom.

Fun with friends before the move

Dad helped build a solar boat for the boys

I bought the boys summer workbooks to keep their math and reading skills sharp.  I told them that if they finished the entire book before school started, I would get them a prize.  Chase knew exactly what he wanted, and worked really hard for it.  He ended up finishing the book with about 4 weeks of summer left.

More Pool fun - Utah has the best aquatic centers

Boys - they are always getting into trouble.  One day Blake wanted to shave so he went into my bathroom, got my razor, and tried to shave his face.  He cut open his lip and it bled a lot.  Poor Blake was screaming and said, "I shouldn't have done that!!!"

Chase loves mountain biking and really enjoys riding on a local pump and jump course.  He is really good, and can keep up with some older kids.   He was getting a little too confident, and went down a step incline.  He fell and got scraped up.  This is just going to be my life with active boys!!
